The Reach For An Educated Constituency
Commentary by: Susan Uchitelle
Aired November 16, 2009

Last week the Missouri Senate Committee for 2020 held one of its ongoing public testimony meetings in St. Louis. The Senate Committee’s mission is to create an education system in Missouri where every child enters school ready to learn and to maintain elementary, secondary and higher education systems that educate students capable of being productive and successful citizens prepared for global competition.

National data indicate a strong correlation between economic success and attained education level. Missouri ranks a dismal 30th in the nation in the number of 25-34 year olds with a degree past high school. National data indicate a strong correlation between economic success and attained education level. It is so important that we commit ourselves in this region to improve the academic achievement of our young people with the expectation that they will continue through some post secondary training.

This Senate Committee is authorized to develop a long term state education strategy so that by 2020 Missouri rise far higher than 30th in key measures of educational attainment and success. Last week’s meeting was an opportunity for all groups to provide and strategies for the next stages of educational expectations for Missouri.

In St. Louis so many of our students have so far to go to first catch up to grade level expectations and then beyond. We are not keeping up with our commitment to educate our children for the future. This failure must not continue.
